How to Build a Team: Who’s on yours?

There is a saying “focus on your strengths, delegate your weaknesses.” Trying to be everything might be the right way to go when you first start out with a small business or freelance gig. But letting go of something that is tedious or difficult can be freeing. There is no need to feel you have failed because you don’t know how to write a brochure, set up a website, or complete your tax return.

With an experienced team behind you, you don’t need to be overwhelmed again.

Who’s on your team?

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it’s a start.

Web Developer

There are people who do this for a living. Sure, you can have a go at doing this yourself, and you may end up with a great website. You may also end up spending so much time setting up your website that you overlook other things like writing your blog, or sending out a newsletter. As well-trodden saying Frozen goes “Let it Go!”

Graphic Designers

You need a new logo? Yes, you can make your own using one of the tools available online and it may look ok, but graphic designers are experts in this field. Besides, your funky new website will need a new logo to go with it.

Photographer

If you are like me, you are never in front of the camera but you hide behind it. The only pics I have of me are dodgy selfies and the occasional shot that a relative or friend has taken. When creating your brand, especially if you are a lone ranger, pay a photographer that you like and get some good head shots. After all you don’t want to cringe every time your see your picture on your website!

Accountant

We all procrastinate when it comes to getting our tax done come June 30. Accountants are people who can do this for you with relatively low input from you. Just make sure you keep your receipts and bank statements, hand it over and let them work their magic! Consider using an accountancy package such as Xero to help keep your affairs in order.

IT Support

We have all been there – losing a document or your computer crashes. If you have employed a web designer they can be a great source of IT support. If they can’t help you with an issue then they will certainly know of someone who can.

Meeting Venues

So you usually work from home and that may or may not involve pajamas! There will be times you need to get out and meet a client in a more salubrious venue. There are many spaces available where you can rent an office or a conference room by the hour. You don’t always have to meet in a noisy coffee shop.

Writer

Having creative and quality content for your web site, blog or newsletters can be the difference between success and mediocrity. Don’t skimp on your content. Leave it to the experts.
