How to Write a White Paper in 10 Easy Steps

Not sure what a “White Paper” is? Surprisingly enough it has nothing to do with the colour. A white paper is used for the purpose of generating leads, building trust with your clients or potential clients, and increasing sales.

A white paper is different from an Ebook, another type of informational document published by businesses. But just how different?

eBooks are (as the name suggests) electronic books and they are usually an overview of a topic or brand. They are usually more conversational and are directed at the everyperson or non-expert.

Research is key
Generates leads

White papers are more formal and targeted at expert audiences already familiar with a topic but may wish to learn more about a particular aspect of it. This may be a detailed analysis of a specific strategy. White papers have more facts and research and are aimed at professionals.

How to get started

  1. Choose your topic. make sure you choose something relevant and engaging to your clients.
  2. Research thoroughly – a white paper is based on facts so ensure you information is accurate.
  3. Understand your audience – what does you audience want to know about the topic?
  4. Set out your findings – there are many templates available but a general rule of thumb Title/Abstract/or Summary/IntroductionSection/ Subheadings/Footnotes/Sources/Conclusion
  5. Choose an attention grabbing title – it’s ok to leave your title choice to the end, but when you do select one, make it relevant.
  6. Choose appropriate subheadings – to break up your text and make it easier to read.
  7. Cite data and statistics – your topic must be backed up with evidence – ensure all evidence is up to date and accurate.
  8. Check your paragraphs for meaning – each paragraph must bring meaning to your paper.
  9. Check and edit and then do it all again.
  10. Publish with a cover page and table of contents.
